Colour pattern changes considerably with growth; juveniles have a black eyeband. Occurs singly or in pairs. Usually solitary, but may form loose shoals of 5-6 individuals and usually are found around isolated coral heads. Yellowhead butterflyfish are territorial and aggressive to other chaetodonts.
